What's the Difference Between Dry & Dehydrated Skin?
It's easy to mistake dry skin for dehydrated skin; after all, they look and feel pretty similar! The difference is dehydrated skin lacks water, and dry skin lacks oil. Also, dry skin is
a skin type, and dehydrated skin is a
skin condition. A skin type, such as dry, oily or combination, stays with us for long periods of our adult life. On the other hand, skin conditions like dehydration, irritation and acne can come and go. But, any skin type (including oily skin!) can get dehydrated.
What Causes Dehydrated Skin?
Not Drinking Enough Water
Let's start with the obvious one! If you're not drinking enough water, it can show on your skin. The skin is the last organ of the body to receive the nutrients we eat or drink, so it's essential to keep on top of your water intake for healthy skin. Try increasing your water intake and adding water-rich, hydrating foods like cucumber, watermelon, and apples to your diet.
Too Much Sun
Here's the thing with the sun, although it feels lovely to bask in the sun's rays and soak up Vitamin D, it can also cause skin issues, including dehydration. As we know, the sun evaporates water pretty quickly and can also draw out the water inside our skin. If you have dehydrated skin, the best solution is to limit sun exposure. If you go out in the sun, replenish the water loss by increasing your water intake.
Air-Conditioning
I'm sure we can all relate to this one! The air around us has a massive effect on our skin and bodies. Air conditioning draws the moisture out of the air, which can lead to our skin becoming dehydrated. Just think about how thirsty you can get during a flight; Well, air-conditioned environments can make our skin thirsty too!
