What are Pores?
Pores are tiny openings on the surface of your skin. Their job is to release oil and sweat from your glands. Sounds lovely, right!? Although they can be annoying, your pores are vital to your skin health as they release natural oils that help keep your skin moisturized.
You might notice that your pores are more prominent in certain areas of your face. This is because pores and oil glands go hand in hand, so you'll have pores anywhere on your skin where you have oil glands.
Why do I have large pores?
It's Genetic
Unfortunately, this is just another one of those things we thank our genes for! Pore size is often genetic and runs in the family.
Aging
As we age, our skin starts to lose elasticity. When that happens, gravity kicks in, and our skin begins to sag, making our pores appear larger than before.
Excess Oil
If your skin produces too much oil, it can attract dead skin cells and other debris on the skin's surface. This can lead to blockages in the pores, making the pore opening appear larger.
Sun Damage
Overexposure to the sun is responsible for endless skin problems, and large pores are no exception! The sun emits UV rays, breaking down the skin's collagen and elastin fibers, resulting in larger pores.
Tips to Prevent Large Pores
Tip #1 - Always use Sunscreen!
Overexposure to the sun plays a major role in the health and appearance of your skin, including pore size. If you are a sun worshipper, make sure you are using a high-quality SPF when out in the sun. And, even if you don't spend much time in the sun, most dermatologists recommend wearing an SPF 30 or higher every day to protect your skin from UV rays.
Tip #2 - Exfoliate Regularly
Regular exfoliation will help remove the dead skin cells that lead to clogged pores. Once these skin cells combine with oil, they are likely to cause blockages that can increase pore size. Look for a safe, gentle exfoliator that is designed for your skincare. Salicylic Acid is an excellent exfoliating ingredient that helps with pore size!
Tip #3 - Look for Non-Comedogenic Products
Opting for non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products can help if you suffer from large pores. Non-Comedogenic products don't contain any ingredients known to cause blocked pores. You'll usually find a 'non-comedogenic' label on these products, so you might want to avoid products without that label.
The Best Ingredients for Large Pores!
Niacinimide is a great all-rounder when it comes to treating various skincare conditions. It's also great for minimizing and decongesting pores.
#2 - Salicylic Acid
Salicylic Acid is an absolute godsend when it comes to the pores! Because this acid is oil-soluble, it can break through the oil in the pores and dissolve blockages.
#3 - Witch Hazel
Because of its natural astringent benefits, Witch Hazel can effectively control excess oil that leads to clogged pores.
Myths About Pores!
There are a couple of very persistent myths about pores out there! Let's have a look at the facts and fiction of pores!
Myth #1 - Heat Opens Your Pores
I'm sure we have all heard this one! It was once thought that heat or steam can open your pores. This is, in fact, a myth! Our pores can't open or close. Heat or steam, however, does soften blockages in the skin, making it easier to unclog pores and remove blackheads.
Myth #2 - Cold Water Closes Pores
Oh, how we wish this one was true! Wouldn't it be great if you only needed a bit of cold water to reduce your pore size? But, as mentioned above, pores simply don't open or close. Your best bet to minimize your pores is the correct skincare routine!
